Rank Math Review: the Free SEO Plugin I Installed on This Site

I only recommend tools I actually run — this one is installed on this very site.

There’s a specific kind of SEO plugin that drives me crazy: the kind that makes you pay for basics like redirects and then upsells you a “premium” tier that’s just the free tier with a higher limit.

Rank Math isn’t that kind. I installed it on this site a week ago — went from zip file to configured in under ten minutes — and after a week of running it, the free version is genuinely the most generous free SEO plugin I’ve used. Here’s my honest take after the install.

What I did today

I set up Rank Math on dogwood.digital (WordPress, Enfold theme) using the setup wizard. The wizard walks you through site type, Search Console connection (I skipped connecting my Google account for now — optional), sitemap settings, and SEO tweaks. Nothing broke, no conflicts, and the modular design means you only enable the features you actually want — nothing loads unless you turn it on.

What the free version gives you

This is the part that surprised me. Rank Math’s free tier includes things other plugins charge for:

  • Up to 5 focus keywords per post (Yoast free gives you one)
  • Built-in redirect manager (301/302/307/410/451) — no separate plugin needed
  • 404 monitoring — catches broken links automatically
  • 20+ schema types (Article, FAQ, HowTo, Video, etc.) without touching JSON-LD
  • XML sitemaps, breadcrumbs, and on-page content analysis with a 0–100 score
  • Google Search Console and Analytics integration
  • WooCommerce SEO basics included free

For a new site or a side project, that’s a complete SEO stack for $0. The free version isn’t crippled the way most freemium plugins are.

When Pro is worth it

Rank Math Pro adds what I’d call the power-user layer:

  • Keyword rank tracking built into your WordPress dashboard (500–50,000 keywords depending on plan — no separate rank tracker needed)
  • Advanced schema generator
  • Google Trends integration
  • Content AI — writing and optimization suggestions (note: this runs on a credit system, so it’s a separate cost on top of Pro)

My rule of thumb: run the free version until you’re publishing regularly and actually checking rankings. If you’re managing client sites, the Business/Agency tiers cover 100–500 sites per license, which beats per-site pricing from competitors.

The honest downsides

  • Advanced Mode can overwhelm beginners. There are 50+ settings if you go deep. The wizard’s Easy Mode is fine for most people — stay there.
  • Content AI is a separate paid add-on, not included in Pro. Factor that in if AI writing assistance is the reason you’re buying.
  • Support is ticket-based, 24–48 hours. No phone support.
  • A perfect 100 score means nothing. Rank Math’s tests are recommendations, not a guarantee of rankings. An 80+ green score is plenty; don’t contort your content chasing 100.

Who should use it

Get Rank Math if: you want one plugin to replace several, you’re running a WordPress site and want schema without code, or you manage multiple sites and per-site plugin pricing is bleeding you dry.

Skip it if: you want maximum simplicity and one site (Yoast’s interface is simpler), or you need deep AI content optimization — a dedicated tool like Surfer or Clearscope does that better.

Bottom line

Rank Math earned its spot on this site: the free version covers everything a new blog needs, the setup is painless, and it’s lighter on page load than the main alternative. If your needs grow into rank tracking and advanced schema, Pro is priced sanely.

That’s the review from someone who installed it and ran it for a week instead of reading someone else’s.
